Red = Embarrassment

I’m with my mother as a young two year old lad riding the Sydney tram. Mother is reading a magazine and I am standing next to her on the seat looking around at all the other people on the tram and at the scene outside. Such an inquisitive child !

And then I see it. The lady in the seat behind us is wearing a hat like all the other ladies in the tram. But her hat has a bunch of red cherries as ornaments on top. And I love red !

So I carefully and slowly twist my body to move with my head, without mother knowing. This lovely lady’s hat is just out of reach but I must have those berries ! The tram stops and with a tremendous urge I stretch and reach and grab those beautiful little red balls and pull the lady’s hat off as I tumble over the seat rail and fall into her lap.

Oh dear ! My mother is so embarrassed that she apologizes and gets off at the next stop way short of our destination. I get a scolding.

But you know what? To her dying day mother would repeatedly tell the tale of one of the most embarrassing days of her life…
